Windows XP not making it past blinking underscore

i start my computer and all it does is show the startup logo and then goes to a black screen with a blinking _ (underscore) wats up with that? :-/

A few questions, if you please:

Has anything changed prior to this behavior?  (For example, did you add a new expansion card, such as a video card?)

Do you hear any series of beeps coming from the computer's interior speaker?  If so, how many beeps do you hear?

1 no i didnt add anthing or change anything
2 if i do a POST test enhanced it beeps once

1. Before Windows XP loads, press F8
2. Choose last known working configuration and press enter.

ok so i tryed that and all it did is started beeping like crazy untill i letgo of the butten then i tryed coninuly taping it and it just beeped every time i tapt it so i waited for it to get past the part that it beeps and i just did nothing besides the blinking _ (underscore)

P.S. my computer reconizes the harddrive according to the people on you chat part here

before the Windows XP loading screen. Not whilst. You only need to tab it once, do not keep it pressed. If that does not work, tabbing it rapidly may do.

i got this disk called ntfs 4 dos a guy called remmis on you chat site told me to use it but i dont know what to do with it
When i press the F8 key it just does nothing
even before the windows xp screen which doesnt even come up cuz it just goes to the memory test then the screen with the underscore
and stays there
nothing else

I  would as a test take out the extra ram......mismatched ram may cause your problem?

umm i dont have a xp disk because it was on the computer before we got it. we got it from a school

Then you will have to obtain Windows XP. Each computer owner should have a legal OS for their PC.
