HELP! i accidently deleted everything X(
    « on: April 14, 2010, 11:12:15 PM »
and when i say everything, i mean EVERYTHING :-[
please I'm new at this so bare with me and I'm really trying to soak up and absorb as much as i can.

so a friend had recently given me an old ( I'd say 03-04 ) dell dimension 4600, he said he didn't want it anymore and that i could have it, so i figured "*censored*..ill just reinstall XP on it and sell it on like craig's-list and try to make a quick buck"..when i turned it on it was obvious that this thing had ALOT of viruses so i decided to run D-BAN (deriks boot & nuke) on it just to make sure that i got rid of everything on it but when i re-installed windows XP on it i realized that i had deleted drivers (i guess) and i cant get on the internet i cant really do anything...

    i dont know how to:
    A) determine what network card i have
    B) what drivers i need other than the network driver
    C) download these drivers
    D) install these drivers on the dell

if you know what D-BAN is than you know what it does and what kind of problem ive just created for myself
    can someone help me!?!?PLEASE?!

    thank you...

ps. im a noob..i know this.. but who ever takes the time to help out this "noob" is a saint and will have my ever lasting appreciation

(just incase you dont know what d-ban is)

Yes, we know what d-ban is. It really does wipe out everything.
Here is one way to get the LAN card up.

    1. Remove LAN card from the victim.
    2. Place in in the good machine, let windows find it.  Maybe it wont; work.
    3. Try using Windows update. May not work either.

If the above is no help, get a program like Everest to identify your hardware.
    http://download.cnet.com/Everest-Ultimate-Edition/3000-2086_4-10499291.html
Download only the free Everest program, not the other stuff.
Use a USB flash to bring it over to the victim and run the program on the victim.

From there, you should be able to do the rest on your own.

Do NOT use driver detective. Waste of time and money.

All of your drivers are here:

    http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&ServiceTag=&SystemID=DIM_P4_4600&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid=

Use a computer with an internet connection to download them. Burn them to a disk or a flash drive then take the disk to the Dell and install them. The chipset driver should be the first one that you install.

To determine which drivers you need, you will need to travel to device manager. Click start then run and type in devmgmt.msc and press enter. In device manager, any device with a yellow question mark or exclamation point will need a driver. Find the corresponding driver on the driver webpage and put it on your disk.

Also, after you have installed all of the drivers that you need, you should get all of the updates for that computer. Click start then all programs and choose windows update, let it scan the computer and install all of your updates. You will probably have to go back to windows update a few times, restarting after each time. Keep going back until it stops finding updates.

okay so its telling me i need three things and im guessing they are drivers

        1) ethernet controller
        2) multimedia audio controller
        3) PCI modem

i then went to the dell website and i do not know which to download at all and before when i did try to download drivers from that site i would click and add them to "my downloads list" and when i go to download it makes me download this thing called the "dell driver download manager" and whenever i open it up its telling me i have no drivers to download X(

so my first question is how do i know what drivers to download off the dell website? and my second question is how do i download them?

and i might as not waste any more of anyones time but how do i install them? or is it just a quick and easy click and it goes thing?

        THANK YOU SO MUCH AGAIN!!!!!

Start by going to the web page and look for Chipset Driver and click on the drop down. You should see a file listed on the left side of the page called intel - driver. Click on the file name and you will go to another web page. From there you can click on the file and you will be asked to run it or save it. Save it to your machine. Remember where you save it to....in most cases your My Documents folder.

Go back to the first web page and pick another drop down and repeat the steps until you have all of the drivers you need. Then come back here and tells us the names of the files you downloaded.

You should be looking for the newest version of the driver.

Don't click on "Add to Downloads". Click on the blue "Download" button directly above that.
        Install your chipset driver first.

Your ethernet controller is under Network on the driver page. It's the last one down, called "Intel - Driver" Applies to 10/100 LOM.

Your audio controller is the first one under "Audio".

Do you still have errors in device manager?
How are you trying to connect to the internet? Dial up, DSL, Cable modem?

Install the last listed Network driver on the page above....under Network drivers...Intel Driver for 10/100...
If it still does not work you may need to grab a new PCI Network card...bout 15 Bucks.

Do you have the "Broadcom Gigabit NetXtreme" network port on the back of your computer?

You can also try running SIW (freeware) from a USB drive to ID the hardware you need drivers for.

99 times out of 100 it will be able to correctly ID. The hard part then is to locate the precise software for the hardware.

The SIW standalone version on the left side of the page is what you need to run from USB flash drive:

                  http://www.gtopala.com/siw-download.html
