    need help with new case
    « on: April 15, 2010, 08:46:47 PM »
not sure if anyone owns an old alienware preditor case and would know if it could fit a mico-atx motherboard in it.
looking to put this in http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130246
    and have this now http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/D875PBZ/sb/CS-008952.htm
this is a full tower case.

Have you looked at the measurements for both and used that to determine?

If a case is 4x6x2 and a board is the same, it won't fit.

Have a look at the standoffs in the case, see if they match up.  If you're unsure, post a picture of the interior with the motherboard removed.
From what I can find, that case was never released as just the case, only as part of the full Predator system, so I'm unable to find any info on whether it would support micro ATX boards.
There's no logical reason why it shouldn't, but OEMs such as Acer aren't always logical.
I wouldn't purchase the new board until you have confirmed it will/will not fit.

If anyone does have that case, they would of course be able to tell you, but it's not the most common thing around :)

It will work with any decent case...
The stanoff screw holes are there for both mini ATX and full size...
However this may not be true for mini's...
      Call the case manuf.

You probably don't need a 750W PSU unless you intend on some very high end graphics cards.  Drop that down to a 650W Corsair, that leaves you plenty of headroom for upgrades and would save some cash.  Put that cash towards something like an ATI 5770.  Also, I'd advise grabbing 4GB of RAM, it's more cost effective (around $100 for 4GB vs nearly $70 for 2GB).
Alternatively, if you give us a budget, the parts you already have, and what you want to use the machine for, we could possibly come up with other suggestions.
Those parts will however work just fine.

Doesn't make sense it don't fit...
Course MSI tends to do what they want...

I've had several problems with MSI boards.
Don't even get me started on the drivers.

From the pic it looks like you have the necessary holes. You might need to move the standoffs around to accommodate the board's screw holes.

                The board could short out.

when you mean short out do you mean like turn on and shut right off or like spark and ruin it
Also does anyone knows what happens when you turn it on with no processor what will happen

Could do either.  Not worth risking it.

It won't POST.  It may either not turn on at all, it may turn on, fans will spin and nothing happens, it may turn on and shut down, it may beep, it may not.  Different boards do different things.  There's no point in turning it on without a processor in, regardless.
