Someone took over my computer
« on: May 23, 2010, 07:17:51 PM »
Just bought a 2nd hand laptop, and was listening to music when I noticed someone had remotely taken over the computer.  I quickly disconnected the internet connect, but I guess some damage was done since directly after that, the previous owner's password was required to unlock the computer when the screen save turned on. I have disabled the screensaver and have changed the name of the computer.  Since this was 2nd hand I don't have any of the original operating system discs, and really did not want to pay big bucks to by Microsoft operating system & office programs.  I am running a Linksys router firewall.  Any suggestions on how I can protect myself better, and identify what kind of damage might have been done by who ever got into the laptop?

The best thing to do with a 2nd hand machine is a wipe and a clean install.

You may never be safe until you do a clean install. I would do a clean install.

If you don't want to buy Windows you could try Ubuntu Linux. It's free and it'll come with OpenOffice Suite (compatible with MS Office) installed for you.
