    Vista freezes at Welcome screen
    « on: April 10, 2009, 03:18:00 AM »
    I have a newish HP Pavilion laptop - AMD Turion2 - 4G ram - 250G HD - absolutely no problems until:

Upgrade of Avira antivirus suite v8 to v9.   Twas supposed to be fully automatic.   On auto reboot after installation (which seemed to take forever) when Vista started to load it got as far as the logon screen, I tapped in my password, the Welcome screen came up and that was that.   After a couple of minutes the screen went black (not blue).   Nothing, but I can open task manager.  It shows no applicatins running at all.   6 processes running etc.

I can run in safe mode (I am using this now)   I think I have managed to delete 99% of the Avira files. (I could not un-install).  this has made no difference.   I have had some help from Avira forum but they are now saying it is a Vista related problem if it still won't work with Avira not running . . .

Hope someone can help . . .  I really do not want to re-install Vista

Have you tried re-installing Avira 9 again?

Deleting Avaria probably didnt help you out much... it is needed since it intergrates with your system.

      Try this:
Restart your computer. Right before Windows starts to load, start tapping the F8 key on your keyboard.
      Select "Last Known Good Configuration"
This >should< bring you back to Avira version eight.
If this works, uninstall Avira, restart twice, and install version 9 again.
Also make sure all other antivirus programs that may be on your computer are uninstalled before installing another scanner, two residential scanners can not run at the same time without crashing your system at startup.

If this doesnt work, restart your computer and tab F8 at the startup again, and select Safe Mode.
      From SafeMode, uninstall Avaira.

Sorry . . .    should have said that I have tried system restore (twice) I have also tried to re-install a fresh copy of Avira and it won't run - gives me an error message.  Avira 8 is mostly deleted, and anyway I have disabled it in the Task Manager, Services (local).

i can only do limited things in Safe Mode with Networking . . .

        Thanks guys . . .

Go Start>Run (Start Search in Vista), type in:
        msconfig
Click OK (hit Enter in Vista).

        Click on Startup tab.
        Click Disable all

        Click Services tab.
Put checkmark in Hide all Microsoft services
        Click Disable all.

        Click OK.
        Restart computer in Normal Mode.

NOTE. If you use different firewall, than Windows firewall, turn Windows firewall on, just for this test, since your regular firewall won't be running.
If you use Windows firewall, you're fine.

So, this happens in Normal Mode, right?

While in Safe Mode with Networking...

          Download avz4.zip from here
          • Unzip it to your desktop to a folder named avz4
          • Double click on AVZ.exe to run it.
          • Run an update by clicking the Auto Update button on the Right of the Log window:
          • Click Start to begin the update
Note: If you recieve an error message, chose a different source, then click Start again
          • After the update, from the "File" menu, choose "Standard Scripts"
          • Put a check next to item 2: Advanced System Analysis
          • Click Execute selected scripts
          • At the next prompt, click the Yes button
          • Let the scan run and click "OK" when the completion prompt pops up
          • Now Close out of the Standard Scripts window, and exit AVZ
          • Navigate to the avz4 folder and locate the folder LOG
          • Inside the LOG folder you will find virusinfo_syscheck.htm and virusinfo_syscheck.zip
          • Attach the compressed file, virusinfo_syscheck.zip, to your next reply.

In Task Manager, File -> New Task (Run...) -> type in explorer -> click OK -> see if the Desktop icons show up.

It's a workaround, but it may lead to better things...
