NAS
« on: May 11, 2010, 11:32:44 PM »
Hi, I am going to jump into the world of nas, but im totally ignorant on the subject. basically i want to backup, print server, and access my files on the web. I want storage of about 1TB and preferably 2 x 1tb drives configured as raid 1 for extra security in case a drive fails. It would be really nice if I could backup using Acronis direct to the nas, but if necessary I can copy the backup to the nas????.
I have looked at a QNAP TS-210, A Dlink DNS-323, and a THECUS N2200. I obviously dont want to spend a fortune. I like the idea of a usb port to expand the capacity but i dont think you can do this with the dlink? I have also read that the thecus is very slow?

Any ideas as the best way to go?
Many Thanks

I did some research on this one intending to buy, but then decided against it.

Thanks for that, but I really like the idea of raid 1 and having a print server.

The Dlink DNS-323 seems like a good choice for your requirements.  If you did not need the device to function as a print server, the lower cost D-Link DNS-321 might be a good choice.  See it here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822155009

Many printers are network-capable, meaning they can be connected to a router and shared over the network.  This eliminates the need for a print server.  I gather your printer is not network capable.

Thanks for that, the dlink dns321 is not available in Aus, The dlink seems to have the better reviews on the net ???????
What I am now wondering is seeing I will have to buy a couple of 1 tb hard drives for whatever NAS i buy, could I put the new hard drives into 1 of a couple of old pcs I have and use freenas??  To do this do you know if the old pc has to have raid built in??

And yes 2 of my 3 printers have wired ethernet ports

Thanks again

Either that or get a raid controller expansion card and install it in the computer.

Hi, Thanks for the response, I notice that on Ebay they have combination raid/sata cards pretty cheap, might be the way to go? Do you know if you can boot from a sata controller card?? Neither of my old puters have sata, but the proposed p4 2.4g has raid 1.
