Problem:
For the last two weeks or so, I've noticed that my Internet Explorer 7, Yahoo Messenger (8.1), and several SVChosts see progressively bad spikes in memory usage in Windows Task Manager, running from 100,000 K to 400,000 K. This is recent to these last two weeks.
Negative consequences:
Yahoo messenger is slowing down dramatically, with text input after pressing enter lagging the program, and sometimes the actual showing of the text being written in the screen lagging.
Internet Explorer is seeing some slow downs wedded to a refusal for video files to load into the programs that run them. I use the Core Coded program for WMV and AVI files, for instance, and when clicking on a file to watch (such as a movie trailer) the program sometimes refuses to engage until several IE windows (I prefer to use windows over tabs) are closed.
On occasion, when opening up Task Manager the Windows Explorer (not IE) freezes and forces me to logoff and log back in to get back to functionality.
In other words: This isn't just a case of Vista using more memory more often than XP, but is a case of weird memory usage causing tangible negative consequences that are impacting my computing. What would you fine fellows (and ladies) suggest I do to remedy this?

Possible relevant information:
I've had several resolved rogue antispyware virus program attacks. Malwarebytes gives me a clean bill of bill of health.
When entering Outlook Express by accident (as I do not use the program and I clicked on an e-mail link to get there) it said I was missing a DLL. Sadly, I did not save the DLL error message and I have opened up the program purposefully since then with no problem.
Thank you for your assistance in advance!
