    BSoD; pc won't boot up
    « on: May 01, 2010, 10:08:27 PM »
    Windows vista x64
    alienware m17 (laptop)

while playing an older video game (wolfET) I got the blue screen of death (fatal error wins had to stop running due to hardware) and ever since when the pc turn on it gets stuck at the boot screen (alienware logo and option for boot menu f10, bios settings f2). It will not respond or continue to boot  up. Only two reactions: f2 makes a beep, and ctrl alt delete restarts (unless f2 has already been pressed; if so then it does nothing). What's wrong with my pc and how can I fix it?

Tap F2 repeatedly as the computer is first starting up. Can you get into BIOS now? Is the hard drive recognized?

Only two reactions: f2 makes a beep,

How many beeps? and are they long or short? This is an internal way of telling you whats wrong.. there is a very helpful section here to help with them.

F2 made one short beep that was not repeatable. Also this had no other effect (could not get into BIOS; no way of telling if hard drive was recognized).

Anyway, I let it just sit over night. This morning I pressed F2, it beeped but immediately brought me to the bios. I honestly didn't know what I was looking at for the mot part, so I just exited (discarding changes). This time it booted all the way up into Windows desktop screen and I was greeted with this message:

Return to the BIOS setup page and reset it to the default settings...
Press F6 to "save changes and exit" and answer Y if prompted...

Exiting Setup without knowing what changes were made is never a good thing...

At any rate it's worth a try.

Well I agree, that's why I exited the BIOS without saving changes (not that I made any changes anyway). I would imagine that the settings are already set to default because i've never altered them but I don't want to alter any setting that might have been set from the factory.

So, can anyone tell me why this happened? Luckily the computer seems to be running fine but what does the error mean? The beep? I suspect it has something to do with the GPU RAM, but I don't really know that.

Did you set the BIOS to the default setting as Patio asked you too?
