Black screen, white cursor, nothing else.

New headache for me. A friend turned on his computer and got exactly what the title says. Nothing new was added, either software or hardware, and he scans regularly. Safe modes, last known..., all get the same thing. He thought it might be the video card, but a new card got the same results. Maybe the monitor? Nope, tried a different monitor and got the same results.

I Googled this and the answers I found all start with being able to boot successfully and all he gets is the black screen.

Ideas?

Can you get someone with a working computer to make a cd? If so, go to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD, make the cd, open terminal window, and run chkdsk to find any potential problems.

I'm pretty sure the disk checker is called "fsck" or something similar.

That would be a great idea, and I have the latest Ubuntu burned already, but our schedules are very different and it was a rare thing indeed for me to be able to get to his house when he was there. Is there another way to go, he tried safe mode and safe mode with networking, neither of which worked.
