Computer doesn't start after installing a new cmos batery
    « on: May 18, 2010, 11:35:35 PM »
Well, may be a month ago my computer got some problem in it. So I got a technician and he said that the RAM needed to be replaced and while he was doing the repairs he told that my cmos battery had also run out. He did not have a new one and hence told me to get a new one from a store and install it myself.

Now for all this time I didn't get a new one as felt too lazy, but tired of resetting the date and time every time, I finally decided yesterday to install it.
But after I do install the new battery, the computer won't startup. After pressing the power on switch, the monitor remains blank. However if I press the reset button after that it starts up normally though it still behaves as if the battery is not installed (date and time reset to January 1 2003).
But when I remove the new battery before switching on, it turns on as ususal ie. I do not need to press the reset button again.
    Specs:
    OS Microsoft XP Professional SP2
    Intel Pentium 4, 2.6 G Hz
    512 Mb RAM

PS: There is nothing between the CPU Panel and the battery site ie. I do not need to remove anything from the motherboard or CPU to get access to the battery site. Also I installed it with the side on which it is written "+ Lithium cell CR2032 SV SC3" facing up.

First, I'm a little surprised that a computer tech wouldn't have a CMOS battery for your computer.  The CR2032  is the most common battery, but there are some odd balls out there and I am wondering is that's why he didn't have one.

The + does go up, and it sounds like you installed it correctly.

You may have just gotten a bad battery.   It doesn't happen often, but it does happen.

    Also, look at.

I did not understand what you meant by odd balls.
