Fake antivirus virus. Keeps telling me I have infections
    « on: May 20, 2010, 11:36:18 AM »
I've seen other people with similar problems but they are always slightly different than mine.  I have this thing called Web Protection that keeps popping up telling me I have a virus and I need protection.  It's an obvious fake and I can close it but it relentlessly pops up.  Also there is a fake Windows security icon in my tray that opens bubbles that say I need protection.  When I try to open most files (AVG, running msconfig, most other files) a thing that says "Windows Security Alert. Application cannot be executed. the file **** is infected", with the stars being some sort of file associated with the program.  I cannot even get on the internet -- I am posting this from another computer -- No internet browsers except Internet Explorer open and when I open it no matter where I try to go a screen comes up that says the website is infected and it tells me to download the fake virus protector mentioned earlier.  The task manager is also disabled.  I can't do a whole lot on the computer but if anyone knows how to fix this please help.  I am running Windows XP on that computer.

If nobody comes up with any better answers (which they probably will, so i'd wait a little longer) and if you've got no important files, then i suggest a clean install. You can always virus check your backed up files before you reload them.

But wait for some more replies first, this is a last resort!!!

So you can't get the msconfig up without getting "Windows Security Alert. Application cannot be executed. the file **** is infected" ?
What virus program do you have? Just AVG?
Have you open your taskmsg and try to find it and shut it down?
Install a other Virus protection to try to remove the virus?
