    problem with mspaint
    « on: May 28, 2010, 08:24:23 PM »
My mspaint program wont open image files when I click on image in folder and select "open with paint" I get a box with a red cross saying 'windows cannot find C:\(full path and file name etc) then another box with a yellow triangle saying( C:\Documents.bmp was not found)otherwise the paint program itself works fine when I open it and I can open files from the file menu inside paint and other functions inside paint work
    my OS is xp3
P.S. this started when I upgraded from XP2 but I don't know If it is related to that or not just thought I'd mention it.

    Hi and welcome to CH.
Do you have paint set as your default program for BMP files? . Try this, In Internet Explorer go to -Tools- Folder Options -File Types- Select BMP- choose open with paint- click apply- then close.
    Did this help?

To overthehill thanks for your prompt reply
Yes I tried your suggestion (the bmp file assc. was there)(no It didn't fix it)among several other suggestions I found on various other sites eg. delete registry key for mspaint ,make sure file associations are correct etc I did a complete scan with microsft security essentials no virus or malware was found I did a complete defrag I freed up disk space I have 48% free space.Image files open with other graphics programs I have installed when I right click and select "open with"and yes I know I can use other programs for graphics but I really love the quick and easy paint and I use it quite frequently so I would like to find a solution to this.Thks

You probably realized that I meant Windows Explorer not Internet Explorer as I stated earlier. Right now I can't think of anything else that you could try though. But if I do come up with something I will reply. Hopefully someone else will respond. overthehill

The association text has something like
        Code: [Select]
        mspaint %1

        when it should have
        Code: [Select]
        mspaint "%1"
I was trying to dereference Null Pointers before it was cool.

Thks for that I typed in the quotation marks and I got a box saying 'The specified program could not be found' so I checked and the mspaint file with his own little icon is in the windows\system32 folder where it should be.Any suggestions?

yes I knew what you meant I just added the quotation marks where there weren't any I should have said.Even so it didn't work.I just wondered about the dll files that paint uses to operate so I did a search on the internet and found something about registering the dll files so I used regsvr32 and registered the paint files and there were two that wouldn't register or unregister these were:- msvcrt.dll and oleopro32.dll  the other two (mfc42.dll and mfc42u.dll)were successfull could this have something to do with why it doesn't work properly?
            thnks
