Transfering documents from pc w/ viruses to new pc

My old pc has viruses on it and it costs way too much to fix so I am buying a new one. However, I want some of the documents saved on my old pc transfered to my new pc. How can i go about this without transfering a virus?

Install AV on you new computer.
Buy and external adapter for your old Hard Drive.
Using the external adapter, make the AV program scan the external drive and fix infections.
Last, copy your important documents to you new computer.
Any extra programs you have will need to be installed again.
