    Hi,

Insert the Windows XP startup disk into the floppy disk drive, or insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, and then restart the computer.

Click to select any options that are required to start the computer from the CD-ROM drive if you are prompted to do so.

When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.

If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the installation that you want to access from the Recovery Console.

When you are prompted to do so, type the Administrator password. If the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER.

At the Recovery Console command prompt, type the following lines, pressing ENTER after you type each line:

    md tmp

    copy c:\windows\system32\config\system c:\windows\tmp\system.bak

    copy c:\windows\system32\config\software c:\windows\tmp\software.bak

    copy c:\windows\system32\config\sam c:\windows\tmp\sam.bak

    copy c:\windows\system32\config\security c:\windows\tmp\security.bak

    copy c:\windows\system32\config\default c:\windows\tmp\default.bak

    delete c:\windows\system32\config\system

    delete c:\windows\system32\config\software

    delete c:\windows\system32\config\sam

    delete c:\windows\system32\config\security

    delete c:\windows\system32\config\default

    copy c:\windows\repair\system c:\windows\system32\config\system

    copy c:\windows\repair\software c:\windows\system32\config\software

    copy c:\windows\repair\sam c:\windows\system32\config\sam

    copy c:\windows\repair\security c:\windows\system32\config\security

    copy c:\windows\repair\default c:\windows\system32\config\default

Type exit to quit Recovery Console. Your computer will restart

Pcs - Jackal is gonna have a lotta difficulty inserting anything due to lack of drives.  What you posted is a straight takeout from KB307545 why didn't you simply post a link?

Jackal, you may have a recovery partition which will allow you to reinstall your operating system to its ex-factory settings but before doing that you need to backup all your critical data files, perhaps by installing your laptop hard disk in another system.  More info please on your laptop setup, model etc..

Broni should return soon with more/better advice.

One good deed is worth more than a year of good intentions.

Ignore the post from pcs365 and follow these instructions:

When your system first boots tap the F8 key several times until you get to the boot option screen. Choose COMMAND PROMPT or SAFE MODE WITH COMMAND PROMPT and do the following:

    From the Command Line:

    REN C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM SYSTEM.OLD
    COPY C:\WINDOWS\REPAIR\SYSTEM C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG

Let's see, if you can boot to command prompt as advised by Allan.
If not, we can try my method. Since you don't have CD drive, I hope, you have two USB ports and your BIOS allows booting from USB device.

    Using working computer....

Please download OTLPE  (filesize 120,9 MB)

    • When downloaded double click on OTLPENet.exe and make sure there is a blank CD in your CD drive. This will automatically create a bootable CD.
    • Reboot bad computer, using the boot CD you just created.
      • Note : If you do not know how to set your computer to boot from CD follow the steps here
    • Your system should now display a REATOGO-X-PE desktop.

If the above works fine, and you reached REATOGO-X-PE desktop, proceed with the following...

We'll have to replace the registry hives with a set of those present in the C:\System Volume Information folder, (if Restore Points are available).

Be very careful with following next set of steps:

We need to create a batch file and save it into a flash drive to move information from the sick computer to a working computer. This batch is to list all directories in C:\system volume information, which is useful for finding the backed up registry!.

Important note: Ensure that you Save it on the flash drive. Do NOT save this file on the working computer. You can accidentally run the file in the computer and damage its registry. This file will be ran in the non working computer after following the next set of instructions.

Using your clean working computer do the following:

          1. Go to Start -> Run, and type notepad into the box.
          2. Click OK.
          3. Copy and paste the following code into Notepad:

    Code: [Select]
    Ren C:\windows\system32\config\system system.123
    Dir "C:\System Volume Information" /s >C:\log.txt
    Ren C:\windows\system32\config\system.123 system
    Del %0

          4. Go to File -> Saveas then enter: ren.bat (save it as all files (*.*))
          5. Then.. Save it on the flash drive. Do NOT save this file on the working computer.
          6. After that insert the flash drive into bad computer before booting the system.
          7. Once booted with OTLPE CD, go to Start My Computer then go to your flash drive and copy the batch file to the desktop then double click it to run it.
          8. Then go to C:\log.txt copy and paste it back here as a reply to this post.

Note: You may have to copy and paste the log into the flash drive so you can post it back here.

      Allan,
Now you did the same as I had posted, but don't know why you are getting irritated with my postings. I would strongly like to know why are you opposing my postings by saying "Ignore above post". If it would have not been a forum website with regulations, I would have given you so perfect answer for all what you are doing with my postings.
