A network Cable is Unplugged (Windows 7)
« on: June 11, 2010, 07:59:30 AM »
  • Windows 7 Home Premium.
  • I built the computer about a month ago.
  • It stopped working after a Windows critical update 2 days ago.
  • The internet is working on all other computers, and the ethernet cable plugged into the desktop that is apparently "unplugged" provides internet to my netbook just fine.
  • I tried reinstalling MB drivers.

What do I do now?

Try re-installing your NIC drivers...
Onboard ? or addon card ?

Ummm... I reinstalled the network driver from the mother board CD. No errors in device manager that I can tell.

You can always try uninstalling the update if you think it's related to the problem.

You may also want to try an addon card....the onboard NIC could be defective...
Whose MBoard ?

Well it could be. It restarted and updated itself when I was sleeping and when I woke up I had no internet so... I will try to figure out how to do that.

Like I said, it was a month old and its an MSI 770-C45

I figured it was a budget MBoard...
Nothing wrong with that either.

Instead of buying a card to test ...borrow one from a buddie.

Okay I can try that. Should I still try uninstalling the update?

Weird things like this happen to my computers, but it is now working again. After letting my cable remain unplugged for a while and my computer off, the ISP apparently lost all service yesterday for everyone and its back on, including my computer. I don't know how problems resolve themselves, but if anyone has any insight, I would like to be able to fix this when I need internet access next time, so tips would be helpful.

I reinstalled my updates after deciding they weren't the problem. They were the problem. I'm left without internet again :( I'm not installing any more critical security updates ever again. I'm not sure how it got fixed last time when the whole service went down, but I tried power cycling at midnight.
