    WinXP randomly crashes
    « on: July 19, 2005, 08:24:17 AM »
Hi, I'm not sure that I chose right forum to ask my question. But here it is.
I'm first time here, hope you can help.

I have a problem where my system randomly crashes. I can play games for as long as I like with no problems. The temp stays around 50C.

However, when I run memtest for example it will sometimes be OK (no errors) other times it will just reboot the computer. It also, has this effect when using DVD Santa to create a slideshow.

I have run Hot CPU Tester and it has passed all tests (ran for the full 6 hours).

Would this be my PSU causing a reboot or is it any software? I have 2 DVD drives, Floppy, 2 HD, ATI Radeon 9800 AIW, 3 case fans. All running off of a 300W PSU????

    Thanks in advance!

If your computer randomly crashes, it could be because of not having enough RAM. If your computer randomly reboots, it could be because the PSU can't handle everything it connects to.

And why should that be a problem? Windows XP is capable of handling that with ease.

        Hi!

Thanks to all for your answers.
Sorry, I haven't had access to computer for a while.

To Raptor: it was CPU temperature.

To Gizmo73: But I have 512 MB RAM. Isn't it enough?

To merlin_2: I don't think that it can cause my problem.
My friend has almost the same amount of drives and all works fine...

I would be very grateful if you can help me to solve this annoying:o problem.

Because I was curious as to why that would happen. But nevermind.

Legolas, do you have more than one Memory stick and have you scanned for Viruses, Trojan Horses and spyware?

        Virus scanners
        AVG Free
        -- Anti virus scanner

        Anti spy/malware
        Microsoft Antispyware
-- Anti spyware scanner. Windows XP Home and Professional only.
        Spybot Search & Destroy
        -- Anti spyware scanner
        Adaware SE Personal
        -- Anti spyware scanner

        Firewalls
Using only one firewall is advised. Dual firewalls may cause problems.
Using a hardware firewall and a software firewall is even more adviced.

        ZoneAlarm Free
-- Free firewall - more user friendly
        Sygate Personal
-- Free firewall - more configuration options

        Removal tools
The following files are not substitutes for the ones described above.
They are either diagnostic tools or removal tools for malware of a certain kind

        HijackThis
-- Manual malware remover. Post the HijackThis log generated only if requested!
        McAfee Stinger
-- Virus removal tool. No substitute for a fully functional virus scanner!
        CWshredder
-- CoolWebSearch removal tool. Widely known and persistant Hijacker.

            Hi!

You know, it really helped ???
I disconnected one of DVD drives and it hasn't crashed yet.

To Raptor: I have Dr.Web antivirus and anti-spyware Privacy Expert Suite, I also scanned my computer on your AVG Free and Spybot Search & Destroy. I'm clean. I have 1 memory stick.

And what should I do if I want to have 2 DVD drives?
            Or is it impossible?

Try removing or disabeling a device you do not require. It will release an IRQ adress.

You could do this :IRQ's - Prioritizing

            Start/Run/Regedit
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\PriorityControl. Create a new DWORD value called IRQ8PRiority and set the data to 1, reboot

              Thanks to all!

Now all works pretty good. I'll think once again about removing one of devices from my computer.

Thanks again. I greatly appreciate you help.
