    How to disable USB Power
    « on: June 14, 2010, 07:26:39 PM »
I'm using Gigabyte GA-H55MS2H motherboard. Is there any option to disable the USB Power when the PC is turned off or put into hibernation. It is giving me trouble as I need to turn on my USB powered broadband modem for several period only and not always on. I am sure other users who want to schedule their broadband connection to resume from hibernation for periodic download would want the same feature to be available.

Use the power switch on the modem...

A few modems (not all) have a standby switch, which should reduce power consumption, and allow it to start up instantly when switched back on rather than take a little time to restore communications (how long it takes depends on the make, type and age of the modem).

      Thanks for replying.

The main reason I want to soft-off the modem which gets power from the usb port is that I am scheduling free night-time download and if i turn-off the modem manually, I would have to wake up every night at around 2am to turn the modem on.

I see 2 potential ways to accomplish this task. One being a software program to permit timed stop performance on your USB port the other a timer device to interact with the USB port to which your peripheral is connected. Now the bad news-- a fairly extensive search on google found none of either. Not to say they don't exist though. truenorth

Don't see how spoiler's suggestion wil work as the power comes from the USB port not house current. truenorth

What modem do you have that gets power through it's USB port?

I started to ask that question because I've never seen a modem powered by USB, but that doesn't mean one doesn't exist.

If i had to guess we are really talking about a wireless usb router--anyway that is what i based my reply on. I have found that people interchangeably use modem/router when referring to their internet connections. truenorth

            ack not this again!

             ;D

apparently they want to shut the modem off physically when the computer is shut off.

It's a Nokia Siemens C2110. I modded myself so that it gets power from the USB and is turned on exactly at the start of the free night time download period which starts at 2am. You may check out how I mod it here http://www.chip.in/forums/viewtopic.php?t=32007

OK, now I've seen a USB powered modem.  Seems like a lot trouble to go through just to eliminate one power brick.

It also sounds like you have solved your problem.
