    How to disable USB Power
    « on: June 14, 2010, 07:26:39 PM »
I'm using Gigabyte GA-H55MS2H motherboard. Is there any option to disable the USB Power when the PC is turned off or put into hibernation. It is giving me trouble as I need to turn on my USB powered broadband modem for several period only and not always on. I am sure other users who want to schedule their broadband connection to resume from hibernation for periodic download would want the same feature to be available.

Use the power switch on the modem...

A few modems (not all) have a standby switch, which should reduce power consumption, and allow it to start up instantly when switched back on rather than take a little time to restore communications (how long it takes depends on the make, type and age of the modem).

      Thanks for replying.

The main reason I want to soft-off the modem which gets power from the usb port is that I am scheduling free night-time download and if i turn-off the modem manually, I would have to wake up every night at around 2am to turn the modem on.

I see 2 potential ways to accomplish this task. One being a software program to permit timed stop performance on your USB port the other a timer device to interact with the USB port to which your peripheral is connected. Now the bad news-- a fairly extensive search on google found none of either. Not to say they don't exist though. truenorth

Don't see how spoiler's suggestion wil work as the power comes from the USB port not house current. truenorth

I started to ask that question because I've never seen a modem powered by USB, but that doesn't mean one doesn't exist.

If i had to guess we are really talking about a wireless usb router--anyway that is what i based my reply on. I have found that people interchangeably use modem/router when referring to their internet connections. truenorth

It's a Nokia Siemens C2110. I modded myself so that it gets power from the USB and is turned on exactly at the start of the free night time download period which starts at 2am. You may check out how I mod it here http://www.chip.in/forums/viewtopic.php?t=32007

OK, now I've seen a USB powered modem.  Seems like a lot trouble to go through just to eliminate one power brick.

It also sounds like you have solved your problem.

Earlier I used this method in my old PC. The USB gets power only when the Pc is turned on. But now that I am using new mobo with USB Power, the problem arises since the UB has power all the time.

You know sometimes a solution is right in front of you and you don't realize it. I think such is my case.I have a piece of hardware (basically a switched powerbar) =Nexxtech model NU-288. Now where the relevance to your desires is the fact that this powerbar has 4 switchable 110v outlets and one USB input and 4 USB out puts on it. I believe with the combination of the USB ports and a timer on the bar itself you ought to be able to accomplish your wishes. I suggest that you google it and see what you think. I got mine at a "Source" in Canada (i think they are Circuit City in the U.S. Goodluck, truenorth

Yes I know that USB gives 5v which is adequate for my modem. The problem I am facing now is that the modem is always on as the USB ports of the motherboard are made in such away that they are giving out power all the time even if the PC is turned off or on standby or hibernation. USB ports of normal motherboards gives out power only when the PC is turned on, which is not the case with my system and that is my problem.

lahratla, What about the product i suggested--taking the usb out from the computer to the bar (inserting it into the "input of the switchable via a usb cable) then connecting your modem to one of the output usb ports on the bar. Putting the bar on a timer to shut off the modem at the desired time. If i read the original post your desire is to be able to shut off the modem at a time when you are not attending the computer IE: when your asleep. Seems to me this would do that.truenorth

I googled, but couldn't find it. Kindly let me know the website. Moreover, I'm living in India and the power rating we use out here is 220v. Is there any product of this kind that will support 220v 50Hz?

It's not just the  voltage that's important, but current draw can overload the port.

The more I read this thread, it sounds like the the OP is risking burning out a mother board to save a few cents of power.  Modems just don't use that much power.
