cd drive unavailable

My cd drive is unavailable under my computer.  The cd device is in the laptop (not the floppy disk) but the floppy disk icon is the only one available.  The run D: comand also does not work.  To Anyone: How can i fix this?  Thanks.

Is the CD-ROM drive internal or external?

Has it ever worked with this laptop computer?

If it has, what changed just prior to the problem, or what is your guess as to the cause of the missing optical drive in My Computer?
