IDE Controller
« on: July 19, 2005, 04:53:50 PM »
Hey,

I'm trying to install an old burner on my comp.
My hard drive is Serial ATA and I get this error message when trying to install the burner:

"...could not find a suitable IDE controller" for the burner.

Any ideas? :-/

1. Are you using Windows XP?
2. When and where do you receive this error message?
3. Have you enabled the IDE connectors in the BIOS?
4. Has the drive been set to Master or cable select?

1. Yes
2. When I'm running the setup disk - right at the beginning.
3. I don't know what you mean. But I'll check the BIOS anyway.
4. I'm not positive, but I think it's Master.

I'll have to check #'s 3 and 4.

1. Good. Don't let Merlin talk you into installing ME or anything frolicsome.  ;D
2. You have not yet installed Windows XP?
3. You can disable the IDE channels (not controllers, these are located on the IDE devices) in the BIOS. Unless you or someone else has changed these, they are enabled by user default.
4. Make certain it is if there are no other IDE devices. Cable Select may not always work, play it safe and go with Master.

2. Sorry -  I meant the disc for the burner. When I'm trying to install the software for it. XP is installed.

3. What exactly does disabling the channels do?

Thanks for your replies.

I have another HD which is not SATA - so I may plug that one in too hoping that I can install the burner on that one.

2. Can it not be found in the device manager?

3. It disables the use of the IDE connectors on the mainboard. Make certain that they are enabled in the BIOS.

4. It should work without as well.

2. Yeah it's there. But it's only being read as a regular CD-ROM drive.

Does it read data?

What type of software are you trying to install? Firmware drivers or copying software?

See if installing firmware drivers allows it to be properly detected.

If that does not work, you may wish to remove the device from device manager and allow for redetection.

I have got a cd rw/dvd rom combine drive and another cd RW drive, which have been working well for ages. However, recently, neither drive is accessble. In the device manager, there are ! marks before these drives, and click on the properties, it said 'Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)'. Windows website help suggests edit registry, but it does not work. I don't have windows CD rom to reinstall the system (only a restore cd which would clear everything) And I can't even remove windows xp sp2 and reinstall it.
Please could someone help me solve this problem.
many thanks
David
