Wish I could help you but unfortunately I am not at my age (72 years) very proficient in computer navigation.  If I had your problem, which I never had so far, I too would try to get help.  But don't worry because Computerhope.com will save you somehow.  I have used them and they are really, really, helpful.  So don't lose courage. You'll be alright.  There are many helpful people on computerhope.

what OS r u running on?

i know this happens mostly on vista than xp... vista is truely, i mean really sick as in bad n i suggest any1 on vista should take cover 2 win7.

      ithe problem arises if:

      - the pc mem is dead low (free mem/ upgrade mem/ defrag)
      - 2 many programs runnin (try closing unused programs, use the task manager)
      - a very scary virus ur anti-virus cant pick up... try another anti virus.

or beta still, try doin a system restore to a date it ur pc was perfectly fine.

      if anytin else, PM me

        Hey,
I'd try scanning for Virus' again with as many anti virus' at your disposal. If that doesn't work I'd do a full reformat and reinstall your OS. If THAT doesn't work it may be time for an upgrade. :)

Hey, ya i would have to agree.... on computers with low system resources the computer will allocate hard drive space to serve as RAM so with programs not being used, but still open, it will take those programs and place them in the "hard drive ram". Then when you access the program it will be slower since it's on the disk instead of the RAM chips. What i would suggest is do what the others have said and do house keeping for the computer and, then if you have the money and knowledge go buy some RAM chips that match your computer specs. that have more memory than your current set and install them.

i'm running XP , lots of memory space , only 2 programmes running , no virus trouble , a reformat is the last thing people should be told ,

i think this answers the above 3 posters

Please download VEW and save it to your Desktop: http://images.malwareremoval.com/vino/VEW.exe

Double-click VEW.exe then under Select log to query, select:
        Application
        System

Under Select type to list, select:
        Critical (Vista only)
        Error

Click the radio button for Number of events
Type 20 in the 1 to 20 box
        Then click the Run button.
Notepad will open with the output log.

In Notepad, click Edit > Select all then Edit > Copy
Reply to this post, click in the reply window and press Ctrl+V on your keyboard to paste the log.

        ================================================================

Go Start>Run ("Start Search" in Vista/7), type in:
        sfc /scannow
Click OK (hold CTRL, and SHIFT, hit Enter in Vista/7).
Have Windows CD/DVD handy (with Vista/7, most likely, you won't need it).
If System File Checker (sfc) will find any errors, it may ask you for the CD/DVD (rarely in Vista/7 case).

I'd say, you may have some hardware problem, but let's check something else first.

When was the last time, you cleaned inside the case?

        Download, and install SpeedFan: http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php
        Post your computer temperatures:

Provide processor info (hold Windows logo key, and hit Pause/Break key to find out).

Run SpeedFan in the background and see if those temperatures will rise, when you use the computer.

Run hard drive diagnostics: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287 (or http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=28744&hl=hard+drive+diagnostic)
Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD (select "Write image file to disc" option), and make the CD bootable.

NOTE. If your hard drive is made by Toshiba, unfortunately, you're out of luck, because Toshiba doesn't provide any diagnostic tool.

        =========================================================================================

        A. If you have more than one RAM module installed, try starting computer with one RAM stick at a time.

NOTE Keep in mind, the manual check listed above is always superior to the software check, listed below. DO NOT proceed with memtest, if you can go with option A

        B. If you have only one RAM stick installed...
        ...run memtest...

        1. Download - Pre-Compiled Bootable ISO (.zip)
        2. Unzip downloaded memtest86+-....iso.zip file.
        3. Inside, you'll find memtest86+-....iso file.
        4. Download, and install ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/
        5. Insert blank CD into your CD drive.
        6. Open ImgBurn, and click on Write image file to disc
        7. Click on Browse for a file... icon:

        8. Locate memtest86+-....iso file, and click Open button.
        9. Click on ImgBurn green arrow to start burning bootable memtest86 CD:

        10. Once the CD is created, boot from it, and memtest will automatically start to run.

The running program will look something like this depending on the size and number of ram modules installed:

It's recommended to run 5-6 passes. Each pass contains very same 8 tests.

This will show the progress of the test. It can take a while. Be patient, or leave it running overnight.

The following image is the test results area:

The most important item here is the “errors” line. If you see ANY errors, even one, most likely, you have bad RAM.
