Fan LED Replace/Move
« on: July 01, 2010, 03:08:23 AM »
I'm thinking about replacing the led lights of my fan because they came faulty as in one fan had 2 blue lights and for some reason the other two are purple.. So i was wondering what kind of LED lights do i need to replace them and i want to know too if i have to buy a certain kind of wire because I'm thinking about moving them away from the center of the fan. As shown in the attached picture The LED's are positioned in the center of the fan, but there are holes designed for the LED's to be attached to on the fan frame so i would need to have wires to extend the lights to the frame..
Budget is a factor.

Thanks

I'll give it a try.  It's not as simple or practical as it appears to you.  LED's are different in electrical & mechanical characteristics and in light output (color, lumens).  You would have to know specs of what's in there now before you attempt to replace it.  They're probably too small to have anything written on them.  Besides, before you're done, this will cost more than a new fan.  Also, is it really important what color it is?  It's only a fan; spend your money wisely somewhere else.

Patio's link was provided so you can educate yourself.  If you just want to experiment with LED's, that's a different matter.

Computer_Commando's comments ring true. My Case has Blue LEDs in it for whatever reason- if I wanted them to be red (again, for whatever reason) I couldn't just rip out the red LED from my old cases or floppy drives- different coloured LEDs almost always have different electrical requirements- often just changing a led from one colour to another requires a resistor or two (or the removal of resistors already present), and in order to know what you need to add or remove you need to know the exact specifications of both LEDs and then you have to do some sort of math to come up with what you need to add or remove.
I was trying to dereference Null Pointers before it was cool.

ohh ok.. So based on your guy's answers if i do replace them I'll just end up spending more money and probably mess up the fan. (I do have some soldering experience though) Just last night i replaced the clicker of my trackball mourse from another mouse. So yeah ill just look for new LED fan's. Do you guys know a certain trusty website to order nice WORKING LED fan for cheap?

Thanks for the help
