must reset bios to power up

I was working on a Dell Inspiron 1545 and pulled the cmos battery which reset the bios.

Now when I power down the laptop, I have to remove and replace the cmos battery to get the machine to power up again. Resetting the computer does not cause the same symptom.


Any suggestions?

Enter BIOS and Save settings; usually F10 (Save & Exit).

Completely forgot about that.  Didn't occur to me that a 3 year old laptop would need a CMOS battery.

If that doesn't work, the battery socket may have been damaged in some way, and the damage is causing a short, corrupting the CMOS every time you power down.

Does it also occur if you it restart the laptop?
