    D drive?
    « on: July 05, 2010, 12:20:27 PM »
Can someone please help me? My computer does not recognize when i put a disk in it. It says there is not a disk in it when I put one in. I cannot burn music, play games, or even look at pictures on a disk. How do i make it recognize there is a disk in the drive?

Can you post as much information about the PC as you can and we'll see what we can do.

      Operating system
      Make/model
Any changes recently like new hardware or software installed
      Any viruses / suspicions lately

Put in a bootable disc and reboot, making sure the optical drive is at the top of the bios boot order. Does the system see the drive at boot?

          Never mind.

Do you have an original OS disc (Vista, XP, whatever)? If so, insert in in the drive. What happens?

nothing happens. it doesnt even notice there is a disk inside it. it just sits there, so i try the run thing and it just says "insert disk in D drive" but there already is a disk in there.

It is possible the drive has died. The Dell 310 (in 2006) had a dual layer DVD burner; these start at less than $25 now. But given one of the posts above, my advice would be "take it to a repair shop".

Have you ever been able to do the things with the drive that you cannot do now? What ,if anything, did you do or change on the computer immediately prior to it becoming unusable?truenorth
