The Wi-Fi Naff Box (sorry Neuf Box) from SFR France
    « on: July 07, 2010, 12:31:30 PM »
Not mine, but an Acer Aspire Laptop running Vista, with the usual pre-installed Acers long garbage of programs, but is at least wi-fi enabled.
( l myself have a tower case, and no need for wi-fi but l cannot believe how difficult it seems to be to install and in fact how to change the settings).
It's a French Provider (SFR) and it's called a Neuf Box ( or should that be a Naff Box and l'm being too flippant?).
I know many of you are from the good old US of A, but have a read anyway and you may at least be able to throw up some suggestions, as any will be appreciated.
Now I'm trying to help someone to get their neuf wi-fi to work on the above mentioned computer, which someone was supposed to have set up for them a few months ago.
I'm not too much of a dummy, but don't quote me on that, however this is beyond comprehension at the moment, and l'm a tad reluctant to phone up their tech services
in France as l would like to speak to someone who actually knows what they are talking about! (sorry, bit flippant again there).
This "Neuf" box is connected, a usb cable is connected, and there is an internet connection established. No problems so far.
Now for wi-fi proper, l removed the usb cable and the blue wi-fi light on the box stays on so at least that's something!
Reconnected to the internet and their home page comes up with Neuf's wi-fi gumph so entered friends username, userid, accepted condtions as requested and hit connexion!
Zilch, just said that there was an error in the details entered.
So went into the connections on the pc and for wi-fi, it seems to be set up for using Public Services(?) but does at least to be receiving a wi-fi signal of some description. Under the SSID name, the person who set this up has just put "my wifi". Surely this should have been the SSID shown on the underneath of the Neuf Box, at the very least? Whatever l try,  l just can't seem to alter this.
So at the moment we have an internet connection providing the usb cable is plugged in. Take this out and there is nothing at all wi-fi wise.
Now l have the original setup disk and am a bit reluctant about using this at the moment (don't want to obliterate everything).
When setting up wi-fi then on a wi-fi enabled pc, and l know all ISP's may be slightly different with their software, are there and settings that l should need to be aware of.
    ANY help will be appreciated.
    Regards

From what I could tell the Neuf box is a fairly standard ADSL modem.  Of course, almost everything I found was in French, and I don't speak very much French, and some of the translations I got were kind of so so.  But it shouldn't be more difficult to set up that one than in the USA, or in most other countries.

I wouldn't be reluctant to call up their tech support.  That's part of the service your friends paying for.  You may need a translator to help if your not strong in French.

When I call up tech support in the USA, sometimes I feel like I need a translator to help (and I was born here).
