    Power supply problem?
    « on: July 13, 2010, 02:38:34 PM »
Here is my (actually his) situation. At a friends house someone kicked his computer out of rage, well afterward he got on his computer and was able to stay on for about 30 min. before it completely shut off. Well he called me up to see what was wrong with it because I have some knowledge of computers (mostly software based though). Well I opened up his computer and I looked everywhere for anything that might have been out of place or broken. Well I didn't find anything out of the ordinary except there was dust (which wasn't a surprise) so I took a can of compressed air and got as mush dust as I could out of the fans and other places. Well I hooked everything up to see if it works. The power light came on and also the other lights which were suppose to come on. The strange thing was that nothing came up on the screen and the green led was still blinking indicating to me that it wasn't getting a signal from the computer at all. The power supply's fan and the Cpu's fan also didn't come on. I know how to hook up a computer correctly so I know everything is hooked up right. I'm not sure really what's going on because it looks like the power supply does work because the lights are coming on. Please any sort of help would be mush appreciated. Thank you.

I don't know if this information helps but he has a Pentium 4 processor and I believe 512 ram. Also its a Dell.

Which side of the case was kicked? The side with the motherboard or not?

Fans use +12V, lights use +5V.  PSU is not outputting +12V.

The side without the motherboard. But it was kicked into the desk so I suppose the motherboard was impacted as well. The PSU isn't outputting the 12v? How could that happen?

      Which  Dell?

If an older model, the AGP card is out of the slot.
