Is this guide for deleting a virus safe?
    « on: July 21, 2010, 12:08:06 PM »
Something called anti malware doctor (fake virus scanner) installed itself on my machine. I found this guide here:
    http://www.ehow.com/how_6067077_remove-antimalware-doctor-virus.html

... which I followed to a T and now my PC won't boot up at all. The thing is I can't figure out if it's the virus doing it or because I deleted the reg entry for the virus like the giude said.

I'm not trying to know how to delete the virus exactly just whether or not deleting the reg entry for the virus cold mess up my comptuter like this. Why would this guide be here if it could mess the whole system up? I'd mostly like to know if it was a virus or my own doing.

Following Step 4, just for a beginner, is a bad idea.

You should not edit the Registry unless you know how.

I would recommend to post a complaint about that article.

What about the files it says to delete? Is there much of a chance they could have crashed the computer? I went to regedit on my laptop and deleted a few things I never use just to see if the same happened and so far nothing's happened. I've used regedit a few times in the past and followed the guides but this hasn't happened before.

I sort of figured software was safe to remove from there that's why I didn't hesitate to delete it in the first place.

The files were probably fine in the article. However, editing the Registry has a lot of risks involved.
