Changed case now no CD drive
    « on: August 01, 2010, 03:47:05 AM »
Hi I have just changed the case on my computer.

Everything is fine apart from the CD drive. It does not appear to have any power and does not appear in my computer.

I have tried different power connectors but all still wont work.

    Anything else this could be?

    Cheers!

Does it have an IDE or SATA connector? If everything is plugged into the CD drive, chichi the. Cables back to the PSU.

      Hi,

It is a IDE connector, and the cables all seem fine.

It was just one four pin connector to a CD drive isn't it?

Am I missing something else on the motherboard maybe? I have checked and am pretty sure I have everything powered on the motherboard.

      Cheers

Yeah, the 4 pin power connector. Swap it for a known working cable within the machine.

I am unable to find a known working one as my HD is SATA.

I have tried them all anyway now still now luck. Could it be a connection on the motherboard?

        Or has it just died?

        Cheers

If there is no power to the thing, it's most likely a connection problem, or the device itself is shot.
Sit tight and maybe another member may have a suggestion.

OK so I discovered it works when the IDE cable isn't connected to the motherboard. What could be up? It is a single drive as on its own cable.

            What could be up?

            Thanks

You have the IDE cable plugged in backwards.

Sadly that is not the case.

Should there be a DVD/CD title under device manager even when a DVD/CD drive is not connected? As mine is not showing one.

If it's not connected, it won't show one.  Maybe you better explain what "working" is when the IDE cable is disconnected.

By working I mean has power can open and close the CD drive.

                How do you know this?

it could be plugged in upside down on either the Drive or the motherboard.

I was trying to dereference Null Pointers before it was cool.

Which means you have no issue with your 4 pin connector from PSU... Make sure IDE cables are properly attached and follow the mount and you can't go wrong. Go to BIOS set-up to check if optical drive is recognized.

I have checked, the missing pin is located in the correct position on the IDE

Checked the cables they seem secure. In BIOS nothing is being regonized for the IDE port which is set to auto in set up.

Perhaps a faulty cable? Seems strange as its worked before, only thing that changed is a new install of Windows 7.
