carrie hilton........Ah ....do you mean it reboots? Do you have a good updated anti virus program installed?
Could be a virus causing that ............ or perhaps the PSU is failing .  How old is the pc ? Is it a laptop or a desktop ?

    Let us know

If you don't know the answer, it isn't a dumb question.

How can you have a computer that turns itself off and yet have it run long enough for you to copy a DVD which takes 8 hours?

Points to other thread created by the person in question.

it did it yesterday when i was playing on a game it was like it died , i would'nt turn back on for a while, then i got about an hour out of it . i left it off all night then and now it seams to be ok.
i am hoping i having got a virus which my antivirus might note be picking up!! is this possible??

Actually, I once experienced the same problem and it has never re-occured. Perhaps a power peak. Or whatever power fluctuations are called.

In your case, you may wish to use the following:

    Virus scanners
    AVG Free
    -- Anti virus scanner

    Anti spy/malware
    Microsoft Antispyware
-- Anti spyware scanner. Windows XP Home and Professional only.
    Spybot Search & Destroy
    -- Anti spyware scanner
    Adaware SE Personal
    -- Anti spyware scanner

    Firewalls
Using only one firewall is advised. Dual firewalls may cause problems.
Using a hardware firewall and a software firewall is even more adviced.

    ZoneAlarm Free
-- Free firewall - more user friendly
    Sygate Personal
-- Free firewall - more configuration options

    Removal tools
The following files are not substitutes for the ones described above.
They are either diagnostic tools or removal tools for malware of a certain kind

    HijackThis
-- Manual malware remover. Post the HijackThis log generated only if requested!
    McAfee Stinger
-- Virus removal tool. No substitute for a fully functional virus scanner!
    CWshredder
-- CoolWebSearch removal tool. Widely known and persistant Hijacker.

About the computer shutting off, happened to me awhile back. For me it was my power supply's fan, it didn't cool anything because it wasn't working. Check behind your computer while it's on, see if the fan's working. If not, get a new power supply ASAP, i didn't and it eventually shot my CPU too...
