Vista freezing up, often won't boot from boot disc
    « on: August 07, 2010, 09:39:44 AM »
I have an HP a6200n, 32 bit OS, 2 gig RAM, running Vista Home premium, service pack 2.  I run AVG and Spybot.  I did have some viruses show up about a month ago (?) which supposedly were fixed by the programs, but my computer began freezing up.  Had to shut down with the power button, which only made things worse as when I could get the computer to start again, I would get the error message about not shutting down properly.  I have run every test available with the PC Doctor suite on the boot disc, it always says every test passed, no errors.  And yet the computer will freeze up, sometimes during use, but most often when it is not being used, like during the night.  I have tried just shutting it down completely at night, but then powering on in the morning it will not boot up.   I tried putting the computer to sleep;  same thing.  Freezes up & I have to just power it off.  It's a vicious cycle.  :(  I am posting this with the computer in question, it was a lucky morning.  After reading some posts here, I saw that the Hijackthis log was helpful in many cases, so I went ahead and did it while I could.  I have a netbook on the home network that I can use to check back if this freezes up.  Any help would be very much appreciated!

I may not be able to finish all the steps recommended, my computer keeps freezing.  It has frozen in the middle of three different scans with Superantispyware today.  I finally paused the scan the fourth time after it found viruses/problems that AVG and Spybot hadn't found, clicked for it to clean those, it asked for restart to finish cleaning, restarted, then blue screened again.  When I was finally able to get it booted up again, it ran a complete scan, then said no infections and locked up again.  :(  It's making me crazy, I feel like chucking the whole darn computer.  I want to say thanks to the person who directed me to the steps for virus removal anyway, but now their reply isn't showing up.  Guess I should have clicked the Thanks button right then.  Thanks to whomever it was if you see this post!
