password protect a document

I am using Windows XP. How to protect a word file or any other document by locking it with a password?

i am using Office 2007 but the document is saved as word 2003.

THANX ALL...I found the answer & can lock the document as follow

1. Click on the File Button at the top of the page.

2. Click Save as.

3. On the Save as Pop-up window, click 'Tools' then scroll down to General options (on the bottom left) and choose a password.

4. Choose a password for opening a document.

5. Choose a password for modifying a document.
