    Is this a browser problem
    « on: August 09, 2010, 07:34:50 AM »
    Hi all

A strange thing started happening recently. When I do a Google search I get a list of results, as normal, but when I click on one of the results I am quite often sent to a completely irrelevent page (sometimes I get another results type page, sometimes it can't find any page or sometimes the page is blocked by my antivirus/spyware)

When I hit the back button or close the tab and try the link again I go to the correct page.

So for instance I just tried it. I Googled "cars" (without quotes) and clicked on one of the results which said

    Cars (2006)
    Rated 4.0 out of 5.0
    Rating: 7.5/10 - from 65,802 users
Directed by John Lasseter, Joe Ranft. With Owen Wilson, Paul Newman, Bonnie Hunt. A hot-shot race-car named Lightning McQueen gets waylaid in Radiator ...
    www.imdb.com/title/tt0317219/ - Cached - Similar

and it sent me to this page

    http://www.yell.com/b/WICKED+TINT+CHESHIRE-WINDOW+TINTING-Northwich-CW97NP-6389560/index.html

page, but when I tried again it sent me here

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0317219/  This is the correct page and matches the description.

Should I be concerned? Is it a browser, spyware or windows problem?

    I'm using an

    Acer
    Aspire X1301
AMD Athlon II X2 215 Processor 2.70 GHz
    3.00 GB RAM
    Windows 7 home Premium 64-bit

    McAfee Internet security

    And Firefox (latest version)

All previous virus scans have been clean

Thanks Allen, even though all previous scans were clean I scanned again and it found two trojans. I'll see how it goes  :)

While Allan's concerns may well be at the basis of the problem. Another thing you can try is go into "internet options" and remove all cookies and browsing history and try it to see if any improvement occurs. truenorth

Neither cookies nor browsing history can cause malicious redirects.

The reason for my suggestion is that at one time i had exactly this same phenomenon occurring and doing as i suggested stopped it for me. Whether there were other factors at play and it was just coincidence may be. I never (for that occurrence) needed to pursue the malware route. Therefore i thought i would mention it. truenorth
