recurring items in "startup" of MSConfig
« on: July 24, 2005, 08:50:44 PM »
I have 2 things that keep returning to the "startup" list in MSConfig: "EnsoniqMixer starter.exe" and "sp rundll32 c:\windows\???\se.dll,DllInstall" The first has something to do with sound and is annoying only because it takes up system resources. I'm not sure what the second is for, but the folder keeps changing every time I delete the dll file named.

Any suggestions?

Virus, Spy/Adware Scan!!

google the se.dll file also...it says it's a hijacker.  get hijackthis and see if it works.

"EnsoniqMixer starter.exe"

This seems to be legit. What type of soundcard and drivers are installed?

Virus scanners
AVG Free
-- Anti virus scanner

Anti spy/malware
Microsoft Antispyware
-- Anti spyware scanner. Windows XP Home and Professional only.
Spybot Search & Destroy
-- Anti spyware scanner
Adaware SE Personal
-- Anti spyware scanner

Firewalls
Using only one firewall is advised. Dual firewalls may cause problems.
Using a hardware firewall and a software firewall is even more adviced.

ZoneAlarm Free
-- Free firewall - more user friendly
Sygate Personal
-- Free firewall - more configuration options

Removal tools
The following files are not substitutes for the ones described above.
They are either diagnostic tools or removal tools for malware of a certain kind

HijackThis
-- Manual malware remover. Post the HijackThis log generated only if requested!
McAfee Stinger
-- Virus removal tool. No substitute for a fully functional virus scanner!
CWshredder
-- CoolWebSearch removal tool. Widely known and persistant Hijacker.

This:

Here's the low down on starter.exe:

http://www.processlibrary.com/directory/files/starter/index.php

Raptor is correct; it is legit.

And here is the scoop on se.dll:

http://www.processlibrary.com/directory/files/se/index.php

Maragtas is correct; it's spyware and should be removed.

Hope that helps,
Doc

I already knew that Starter.exe was legit, I just don't want it running because the games I play need all the memory I can give them.

As for SE.dll, telling me to remove it doesn't help because it keeps re-creating itself in new folders every time I delete it.

What I really need to know is how to keep the damned line in MSConfig from re-forming.

Then you should use the tools I provided you with.

If your system is open to spyware, you're not using the system half as efficiently as you think you are.

Try Spyware Doctor and see if you can find all of the elements of se.dll and remove them manually.

Arokthis:

My favorite spyware remover (and one i've been using for years now and am pleased with the results) is Ad-Aware.  It's available as an absolutely free for personal use download here:
