« on: August 19, 2010, 10:23:04 AM »
Ok so i got this used computer for a fair price and i opened the case and replaced its 40 gb hdd with a 60 gave it a dvd burner insted of a cd. Installed windows. Then i noticed the cpu fan was dirty so i pulled it off with the cpu and cleaned it with a vacum and now when the computer starts i get this error

hardware monitor found an error enter power setup menu for details.

i reset the bios to default and tried everything i know when i hi F1 it boots into win xp but when ever i hook up something to the power supply or unplug i get this error. I need this computer running before school starts any help would be great! is there something i can do or should i just hit F1 and ignore?

This is what i have in the power menu

Power Management   [User Defined]
Video Off option         [suspend -> Off]
Video Off Method        [DPMS OFF]
HDD Power Down       [disabled]
ACPI suspend to RAM [Disabled

Suspend Mode           [Disabled]
PWR Button < 4  Secs  [soft off]

>power up control
>hardware monitor

if theres anything else u need to see tell me please.
heres what this computer has

1.5 GHz proccesor
384 mb Ram
60 GB hdd
dvd burner
250 watt power suply
asus motherboard P4B
64 mb graphics card

one more problem i found if i deplug the dvd burner and start the computer the computer will start and then just shut off but the power light blinks?!

ok sorry to keep adding when i start the computer a voice from the computer says

cpu fan fail

then when i hit restart it says
system completed power on seft test computer booting from os and it boots windows. the message before will pop up if i unplug something from the power inside

How did you remove the CPU ?   Did you use the Zero Insertion Force lever that releases the CPU from the socket, or did you simply pry the CPU from the socket ?

Also, when you put the CPU back in place, did you clean it and apply a new layer of thermal grease, following standard procedure ?

You seem to be forgetting, that "the grease" is very important.

It dissipates the heat away from the processor and towards the heat sink.

Lol..  good analogy.   Comda, you'd better get off the tracks, pronto!   ;)

It's not like we are talking about spending big bucks here on grease.

Getting back on topic to the current problem (thermal grease can wait until the PC works properly to overheat). When you start the computer does the CPU fan spin? If so, what does the BIOS register it's speed at?

After that buy some thermal grease (don't know price in USD, not a lot though). Thermal grease has been necessary from somewhere between the 500Mhz to 800Mhz mark.

yes the fan is spinning and by the fan spped in the bios do you mean RPM because in the power menu> hardware monitor>CPu fan speed. it keeps changing from N/A to 1956RPM then other numbers that keep changing to fast for me to get. I allready tried a fan from my other 2.8 GHz pc and still i get the problem. by the way I have a 1.5 Ghz

You have the wrong CPU fan installed and the BIOS may be reading it as overheating.
    You should use thermal grease....
The fan required should match the CPU model and have the appropiate amount of pin connectors...probably 3 or 4.

You may also want to look into a beefier PSU as well...

he CPU fan is the original and the computer seemed to work with it before i took it apart are the speeds ok or not if so maybe theres a way to have the error ignored and whats a beefier PSU?

The CPU fan should not drop to zero, the speed of the fan is variable and standards are different from machine to machine.

Speaking of PSU's [Power Supply Unit] what are your voltages (viewable in BIOS probably under hardware monitor)? Although if they were bad enough to directly cause that fan to wildly change speeds then I doubt the computer would work at all.
