computer wont start with 2 RAM cards in place
    « on: August 27, 2010, 12:45:46 AM »
Currently i have 1 SpecTek PI648HHJ-6A 512mb DDR 2700 card inserted into my Gigabyte GA-8VD667K  motherboard.  I put a second card that is exactly the same in the second ram slot and Th computer refused to boot up.  I've seen 2 of these cards run in a computer the same as mine and i want the same results as it has.  please help me run my 2 cards at the same time

try booting with only your 2nd RAM inserted on the first slot.
this will isolate which slot or dimm is working.
or you may try memtest to test it for you.

Possibly the motherboard or the new RAM module is faulty. Have you ever used more than one RAM module in this board? Also, the fact that each works singly does not mean they will work together. Suggest return new RAM for replacement.

no i haven't used more than one card at a time before now, but i'm almost positive that the motherboard isn't faulty... Could there be a jumper that needs be be joined or a dimm switch that needs switching?

        1.  Could there be a jumper that needs be be joined or
        2.  a dimm switch that needs switching?
        1.  No.  RAM slots have no jumpers.
        2.  No.  DIMMS have no switches.

          Yes.

             1.  Type: DDR266/200 ( For rev 1.0)
             2. Type: DDR333/266/200 ( For rev 1.1)
             3. 2 x DIMM
             4. Max capacity: Up to 2 GB

PC2700=DDR333, however, it may not support SpecTek.

thanks for that... i also read somewhere else that it will support upto 2GB of 2100mhz ram, but i can successfully run 1 x 512mb 2700mhz ram card, what is up with that?

It needs to be DDR2 according to the manual...there's alot of PC2700's out there that arent...

If the computer will boot with either one of 2 matched memory modules, but not both at once, the problem is either with the motherboard memory controller or the RAM sticks.

If that does not work, try new motherboard. (Is this a new build?)

ok... no this is an older machine that i aquired for free as a second desktop, so i dont really want to spend any money on it, i think ill just put up with its painfully slow performance until i am able afford a decent laptop... can anyone suggest a good gaming laptop with out forking out too much??

Nope, look again, it's DDR not DDR2.  Maybe you saw the DDR266 as DDR266

                1.Type: DDR266/200 ( For rev 1.0)
                2.Type: DDR333/266/200 ( For rev 1.1)
                3.2 x DIMM
4.Max capacity: Up to 2 GB
