thanks salmon trout!  patio and allan too!

i know the RAM caused blue screens, i meant should i do any tests to see if anything else is wrong that could also have caused/contributed to the blue screens?

i was looking at the virus and spyware removal guide.  i figure while i'm at it, i may as well make sure my system is clean.  i've done most of that in the past, except hijackthis (and i only have the windows xp firewall).  malewarebytes and superantispyware have never found any issues on my computer.  i just ran hijackthis/sniper.  can someone here tell me what the log means?  or should i start a new topic in the virus/spyware forum?  here is the log:

Just fit the new RAM, if there is anything else wrong, you'll find out soon enough.

Maybe you should post it in the virus section, but personally I think you are over analysing this. The symptoms sounded like RAM troubles, you ran a test, you got a result, you are buying new RAM. Why invent new reasons to be worried?

i'm not worried and i'm not over-analyzing.  i know the ram caused the blue screens.  and thank you for diagnosing that...  but in looking around this site over the past few weeks (i was referred here by someone who used these forums for spyware removal), i saw the virus/spyware removal guidelines.  i figured it would be a good thing to do to make sure the system is clean.  not worrying, just thought it wise to do.

        Good Point...
After you have installed the new RAM then visit the Malware section for a clean bill of health...

thanks patio!  i will wait for the new RAM then post in the malware forum.

i appreciate everyone's help, which saved me from having to buy a new computer (at least for now)!  :)
