    problem with audio
    « on: August 31, 2010, 03:25:51 PM »
about a week ago the sound on my laptop stopped working. i got the red x along with the no audio device installed message. i looked online for solutions and tried a bunch of stuff as it seemed to be a pretty common issue that could be easily remedied. nothing i have tried has worked. i tried downloading a new audio driver, tried updating the driver but whenever i do i get a message that says the driver loaded incorrectly code 10 error wont let it start. i've tried the realtek driver and i get that message, the only time it doesn't happen is when i install the conextant audio driver but that causes my computer to automatically shut down and restart, after a few times o restarting i get a blue screen with a fatal error message(very scary) but then my computer fixes the problem by doing a system recovery.a couple times the sound has returned but soon disappears again and i am back to square one. as you can probably tell i know very little about computers. i have an hp pavilion dv2000 and am using vista. any help/advice would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance.

Have you tried a system restore yet?

Did you install any programs or make any changes to the computer right before this started?

Click start --> search and type devmgmt.msc and press enter. This will open device manager. Do you see any yellow question marks or exclamation points or any red X's there?

Are you running 32 bit or 64 bit vista? If you don't know, you can click start then right click computer and select properties.

right now no yellow exclamation points. there is not a sound device listed. as i have been trying to fix it the yellow exclamation point is there when i download an audio driver and i have the code 10 error listed.

        i just checked...its a 32 bit.

i just tried that link when the conexant audio driver starts downloading it stops and i get a message telling me that my computer cant find the media for that driver.

i have also attempted downloading a realtek driver and that downloads but i get an code 10 error and a yellow exclamation mark  near its listing on device manager. when i try and update the driver it tells me that it is up to date. i'm confused but i'm trying. more help/ideas would rule. thanks in advance.

The download worked fine for me. Are you downloading the 32 bit version of vista drivers and are you clicking download and not install?
