    BOOTMGR is missing.

I keep getting this error every time I start up this laptop. The computer before was having issues with the OS where it wouldn't start etc so what I did was format the drive. There is NO OS installed on the computer so it's a clean drive, however I'm getting this error.

Now, problem is, I can't even boot a disc from the CD/DVD Drive in the laptop. I've reseated the drive to see if it was a simple connection error but it still will not boot my Windows 7 DVD from it. I can hear it spin but it will still not start for some reason. I have the CDROM drive as the first to be booted and I even selected the CDROM to boot directly, but alas, nothing.

My question is, do you think the drive itself is dead and can the HDD still be good? I don't want to order a part from EBay or somewhere to only come out with the same issue over and over again.

Since there is no Windows installed, there is no Bootmgr....

Where did Win 7 DVD come from?

See, if the DVD will boot on another computer.

      I'm a student, I bought a copy of Windows 7.

It boots on my Desktop, but yeah that's why I was confused I suppose. However, I'm sure I formatted the drive, I did it from command prompt.

By the way, thank you for the reply.

On a student license, if you have already installed Windows 7 on the desktop, you won't be able to activate it on the laptop. Leaving that aside, are you sure the laptop optical drive is a DVD capable drive? Because that could be why nothing happens when you try to boot from the Windows 7 DVD in the laptop. If the laptop drive is actually a DVD drive, maybe it is faulty.

I didn't install the copy yet Salmon, oh and thank you for the reply.

Anyhow, yes it's a DVD Drive. I'm thinking it's the DVD Drive because I even tried Knoppix in it, and it won't run.. just keep getting the BOOTMGR is missing error.

I guess I'll try and find a spare drive on EBay for the laptop. Hopefully I can find one.
