    ChkDsk memory dump
    « on: October 02, 2010, 03:58:34 PM »
Pretty much the same story as what you see below.  When I go into F8 safe mode there is just a list of files.  When I run last good config I get problem...Widows shut down to prevent damage. Tech info oxooooooF4 (0x0000000e, 0x85AA0B60, 0x85AA0B60, 0x85AAOCD4, 0x805D2954)
Beginning mem dump....mem dump complete...has run check disk every time which finishes then re-boots but then comes up blue screen with the problem detected screen.  I am very much a beginner.  I also have a laptop with Vista.

My Dell XPS 400 desktop PC with Windows XP (all available updates are installed), will not boot and I am out of options. After the loading screen, it goes to a blue screen (not BSOD, but it may be) and says the volume is dirty and automatically runs a CHKDSK. It fails during step 2 (verifying indexes). Here are the other things I have tried:

-Booting from CD to repair install windows XP, stalls at 25%
-Tried recovery console, chkdsk will not work there either
-Tried to boot in safe mode, did not work, now I am not even given that option.

I only want to get files off of this hard drive but am out of ideas. I have a new Dell XPS M1330 laptop with Vista. Is there a way to hook my PC hard drive to my laptop and access files, or can I purchase a new internal hard drive for the PC, install windows on it, and access my files that way, without having to load windows on my currently jacked-up hdd? I have exhausted my computing skills and am stuck. Please help.

When you run checkdisk from the recovery console are you running it with the /r switch? If not, try that (boot to the RC and run chkdsk /r)

I'm sorry...I don't know what the r/start is.  I just push the f8 button  when booting the computer.  Could you explain what that is?

Would I use the same diagnostic disk to run the chkdsk/r ?  Sorry...I have read the info on Repair Console and still can't seem to get to the Repair Console...not that I can probably remember the Admn password (didn't realize how important that was).

Not trying to waste your time...just trying to find out if my system is fried.  I got an Error Code 0F00:075D  Msg: IDE device failed.

Happened at SATA Disk  Then another Error 0F00:0232  Msg Block 6422017.

        Thanks

Technically, a SATA drive is still IDE. So is PATA (sometimes referred to as just IDE, but is really PATA).

You should download the drive manufacturer's disk diagnostics utility and check the health of the drive.

To get to the recovery console you boot to the XP Cd and choose the first repair option. Since your first post says you've run chkdsk from there I assumed you knew how to access it. Alternatively, follow quaxo's advice and download and run the OEM diagnostic.

He never said anything about "r/start".

Did you, or did you not run chkdsk?

Yeah. That's the drivers getting loaded. It may seem like it locks up at this point, but usually if you wait a few minutes, it will continue booting.

Use your laptop to download and burn a linux distribution to CD. Insert a flash drive or external hard drive into the busted comp. Boot into the linux CD and copy your files to your flash drive. Done! Now you can trash that hard drive and get a new one.
