XP and lost file associations

All - need a bit of advice to hopefully solve an ongoing problem...

XP Pro (Dell D600 512MB ram & D610 1GB ram) both running SP2 - so here goes :)

Both laptops have been venturing around the world (on separate occasions) and ended up with losing nearly all of their file associations the only way i.e. cant open some executibles - I can easily recover from this issue by restoring the OS using a hidden image (Acronis) - now the 1st time this happened we weren't using Acronis (which eliminates that) and the second time we were, so he we have 2 laptops totaly independant from each other but end up with the same problem - both are running Sophos (which is updated hourly when online) and both are also running Ad-Aware SE.

As the user has full admin rights the only thing I can think of is he/she is looking at sites which you shouldnt and along comes some spyware - as I am now at a total loss any ideas would be welcome to help me investigate the issue further - thanks
