Mouse Key Problems
« on: November 10, 2010, 11:33:22 PM »
Hello,

I've been using my mouse keys for a while for playing certain games and such, but not too recently I've come across a problem. Normally, what I would use the mouse keys for was to do Control+2 to do a "skip" downwards, hit 5 to click, and then repeat as necessary.

Before it would only do a jump of one interval at a time per firm key press of 2, but now it seems that unless I use the faintest possible tap of the key, it automatically skips down two jumps instead.

This was working perfectly fine for a long time and it just mysteriously decided to stop working one day.

These are my current settings:

I'm running Win7 64bit Pro and have all the latest updates. I'm on a laptop using an external KB since my laptop didn't come with a numpad.

Any help is appreciated

Have you tried another mouse?

I experimented on my computer and found that if you lower the "top speed", the "control" distance will shorten.

EDIT: Did you mean the distance per interval was too long or that you are actually getting two intervals per key press?

Trying another mouse should not affect "Mouse Keys" which used the keyboard.

EDIT: Tokkulmann, it could be that your keyboard's "Repeat delay" is to short.

Sorry I wasn't clear. I'm actually getting two intervals per key press, but only if it's a firm press. If I tap it only ever so slightly, it only goes 1 interval. Before a firm key press would only move it 1 interval.

And Mulreay, I'm not using mousekeys because I don't have a mouse. I'm using mouse keys for quicker operation of certain game mechanics.

Here is exactly what I'm trying to do:

1. Upon click (numpad 5), it drops the menu
2. While holding control/having sticky keys, pressing 2 lowers the pointer location a fixed amount.
3. Clicking again chooses the option, and conveniently leaves the pointer over the next item.

My problem is that with firm key presses (It's sort of hard to define "firm", but I guess I would say your average strength/time for keystroke while typing) it jumps two steps down now instead of just one. I'm trying to use them the exactly same way as before, and it worked perfectly then. I've not changed how I press the keys at all.

This does work, but I have to be so ginger with my keystrokes that it's not really feasible.

EDIT: Just saw your edit of your post  ::) I'll try playing around with that.

How about uninstalling that particular game and just reinstalling it again...? If you say no changes have been made on default settings. Otherwise, wait for another better solution.

It's a web based game that runs on Java. I've been updating my version of Java so I don't think that would be it.

It might have something to do with the acceleration being turned all the way up.
Also, do you notice at the bottom of the setup mouse keys screen where it says press ctrl to speed up and shift to slow down? What happens when you do shift+2?

If neither of those suggestions help, here's a workaround: Buy a mouse.

I've also already tried dragging the acceleration all the way down it has no effect. Shift+2 makes it move a super small amount.

If neither of those suggestions help, here's a workaround: Buy a mouse.

Please read my other posts. Using mousekeys for what I'm trying to do is around 2-3 times as fast, more accurate, and overall less straining on the hand.

Does pressing control + 4, 6, or 8 give you a double increment also or is it just "control + 2"?

If you turn off mouse keys and use the number pad to type numbers, do you get two numbers per press?

Hmm, an interesting thought, but I just tried it and I get single digits. I pressed the keys pretty firmly too. This is using relatively high repeat delay and acceleration.

I have this exact same dilemma. However, I have solved it by creating a separate user on my computer (non-admin). It works fine after that, but I would really like to know what the problem is on my admin user. . .

Personally, I'd complain to the game creator. Even games shouldn't be allowed to get away with the lack of a keyboard interface.... (well, except console games for obvious reasons).

It doesn't immediately solve your problem but if enough people want it they may have "no choice" but to add a working keyboard interface.

In fact, they very well already have one. If you are able to navigate your "inventory" (if that is what it is) using the arrow keys, you might also be able to use the Application key to show the menu. I don't know, though-I think the menu shown would probably be the same menu you get from right-clicking the applet.

Also, this might sound crazy, but you could try an entirely different keyboard. the keyboard you are using could have something wrong with it or the bounce detection IC could have failed (so when you release the key from a "firm" press it registers a second "bounce" press. This would also ignore the keyboard repeat rate and delay settings since to the computer it appears as an entirely separate keypress. I'm more totally guessing, but it is feasible. And if you have an extra keyboard lying around it's free to try.
I was trying to dereference Null Pointers before it was cool.
