How to rename "My Documents" in Vista
    « on: November 12, 2010, 04:39:13 AM »
A family member set up my HP laptop and used my full name to identify the computer. Now when I download files or save documents they are saved to a folder with my full name and I would like to change that. Is it possible? And if so, how would I do it?
    Thank you.

I don't fully understand the question, but try clicking on the folder and then pressing F2.

Will that also create the correct file and other information associations? WHen you download a file for example, it automatically goes to the {logged in User} downloads folder. This simple rename will take care of that also? I thoughh I would have to create a totally new user account and then try to transfer all settings/files etc.
      Thank you

I'm unclear on exactly what you're trying to do.

Sorry about our miscommunications. What I am trying to do is this: When I download or save an office document, it creates a link to the file. this link now displays my full and complete name, because that is how my friend set my user account up as well as  the computer name. When you type in system information,  registered to, it also displays my name. For privacy reasons I am trying to change all this stuff to something less descriptive. Can it be done w/o reinstalling Vista?

I'm still not completely sure I know what you want to do. Do you want to change the name of your user folder in Documents and Settings? Do you want to change the name of your computer registration (right-click on My Computer - Properties)? Do you want to change the name of your default download folder?

I'm sorry - I know you are trying to explain to the best of your ability, but I find your posts a little confusing (maybe it's me).

          OK lets keep trying.
Yes, I want to change the name of  the user folder in  documents and settings

Yes, I want to change the name of the computer registration

Yes I want to change the name of my default download folder.

You are correct on all three counts. Is it possible to do? Sorry for my confusing descriptions..

          1) Download Folder: You can download to any folder you like. When you want to download a file, right-click on it, and choose the location to which you want to download it. After the first time, it should always default to that folder.

          2) Computer name / registration: Depends on the OS. It's somewhere in System Properties though.

          3) User Folder - unless it's the default Admin folder, just go to Control Panel - User Accounts. If it IS the default Admin folder you cannot change the name. You can, however, create a new user folder and start using that one.

Is there anything special needed to coppy over everything to the new user account?

You can copy the entire contents of the other folder if you like.

              That should work, yes.

And to expand on the default download location, what browser are you using to download?

The folder creation seemed to work. I am using IE8 as my browser
