computer powers on but shows nothing on screen
    « on: November 27, 2010, 08:40:42 PM »
Gateway DX4640 powers on but outputs nothing on screen either with internet cable or by itself. What is likely the problem and is it worth fixing or is it time to replace ?

    thanks

my computer monitor briefly says " no input" and then powers off. The monitor is connected via an hdmi cable . When I ran the hdmi to an lcd hdtv sitting nearby I get absolutely nothng on that screen either . The computer worked fine when I shut it down the night before. Hope this helps.

      Thanks for any help given

Can you try another monitor ? ?

And borrow another HDMI cable as well just to test...

The first thing I tried was a brand new hdmi cable to my monitor. Same thing, "no signal" then it powers off. Then I ran the new hdmi cable to the input on a panasonic 37" lcd. nothing.

If my monitor was bad, wouldn't I have been able to get a signal on the lcd Panny ?

        Thanks alot for your response.

The fact that it powers off would point toward a bad power supply

Are you saying the computer may power on but have a power failure somewhere else that is preventing it from processing ?

If the monitor was the only problem, wouldn't I be able to get a signal by bypassing it and using the lcd tv as the monitor ?

In other words, Is this power supply problem internal to the computer tower and if so is it an expensive repair ?

Your second post says the computer powers on briefly and then powers off - if that is true then it may be a bad power supply unit. It is neither expensive nor difficult to replace.

The computer itself powers up and stays running the entire time (fan runs, led power light on etc.)

When I turn the MONITOR on, it briefly flashes the Gateway logo in the center, then The RGB box that says "no signal" and then the MONITOR powers itself off.  The COMPUTER stays on the whole time.

That is why I thought if the monitor was bad that running the signal to a different display (lcd tv) that it would work, but it doesn't

Is there possibly something enternally wrong inside the computer tower that would prevent it from functioning even though it stays on the entire time ?

I see, sorry - I misunderstood. If the cable is good and if you believe the display is good, I guess it could be the video card. But to be honest, the fact that the display powers down on its own would seem to indicate the display is bad. But this is a difficult one to diagnose and troubleshoot from a distance. Do you know for sure the lcd tv works as a display (did you ever use it before)?

If your display adapter is an add-on card you should open the computer and reseat the card.
Just make sure that the computer is turned off and ground yourself to the computer case before doing this.
