accessing adobe reader from outlook express
    « on: November 29, 2010, 03:36:58 PM »
I have a very old version of Adobe Acrobat on my computer that I need to keep for the use of the distiller.  I also have the latest version of adobe reader as the 5.0 won't open alot of the newer versions of files.  My question is, how do I get outlook express to use the newer version of reader automatically to open any pdf files sent via my email.    right now when I get one if I click on the attachment to open the file outlook uses the old 5.0 reader.  how can i make it use the version 9 without having to uninstall the old acrobat.

Right clik any .PDF file and select Open with...choose the app you want and check "always use this app"...save changes and exit.

I tried what you said and it works fine if the file is already in my documents folder,   it still wants to use 5.0 when it is straight from email.   oe won't let me right click on the file attachment.   now what??

Right, but it was allow you to save the attachment.  So, save it to My Documents or some other folder and then open it with your old Adobe Acrobat.

BTW, I have to wonder whether you correctly did what patio advised.  If you had, I don't believe OE would persist is using your old Adobe Acrobat.  If you have, indeed, correctly set the file association for PDFs to the latest version of adobe reader and OE attachments opened in OE still get opened the your old Adobe Acrobat, you could removed Adobe Reader 9 and install Foxit Reader and see whether attachments opened in OE open with Foxit.

thank you for you advice.   your right to some extent.   when i used the right click to select the reader i was not given the choice of "always use this software" so was unable to make that change.   I have downloaded the foxit and will try that.   I have to say this is for my husband because he is not very computer literate and if one little thing changes he is lost.   i have him yelling at me because he is getting corrupted files when it is just the old reader not being able to open a file.   if foxit works he will settle down.

Good catch, I had to reread that about three times to get it though.
