    Whitesmoke Translator Program - is it a virus? How to remove?
    « on: December 23, 2010, 08:57:39 AM »
    I had a program unexpectedly announce it had just downloaded to my computer last night called Whitesmoke Translator.
    It does not appear in Task Master when running and it cannot be removed from "Add/Remove Programs" even though it is listed as it asks for the source disk to be loaded (which of course there is none).  If I try to delete any of the folders labeled "Whitesmoke" they are listed as protected.
    Has anyone else encountered such a program and is there a way to remove it?  It appears to take control over one's browser (microsoft Internet Explorer in my case).  It also does not appear as a virus when using McAfee Virus scan (all updates done before running a full system scan).
    Can anyone help?

      Thanks...will do.
      Is it safe to reconnect my computer to the internet in the interim, or should I do everything on a non-infected laptop (using now) and transfer things via flashdrive to the desktop that is infected?
      I don't want this exported to people on my contact lists or have it export sensitive data.

          Hello and welcome to
        Computer Hope Forum. My name is Dave. I will be helping you out with your particular problem on your computer.

        1. I will be working on your Malware issues. This may or may not solve other issues you have with your machine.
        2. The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
        3. If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.
        4. Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans while I am helping you.
        5. It is important that you reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
        6. Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
        7. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.

        If you can't access the internet with your infected computer you will have to download and transfer any programs to the computer you're using now and transfer them to the infected computer with a CD-RW or a USB storage device. I prefer a CD because a storage device can get infected. If you use a storage device hold the shift key down while inserting the USB storage device for about 10 secs. You will also have to transfer the logs you receive back to the good computer using the same method until we can get the computer back on-line.

        Download Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to the desktop to remove Windows Messenger.

        Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

        Unzip the file on the desktop. Open the MessengerDisable.exe and choose the bottom box - Uninstall Windows Messenger and click Apply.

        Exit out of MessengerDisable then delete the two files that were put on the desktop.

        You have Viewpoint installed.

        Viewpoint Media Player/Manager/Toolbar is considered as Foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad".

        More information:

        * ViewMgr.exe - Useless
        * Viewpoint to Plunge Into Adware

        It is suggested to remove the program now. Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs - (Vista & Win7 is Programs and Features) and remove the following programs if present.

        * Viewpoint
        * Viewpoint Manager
        * Viewpoint Media Player
        * Viewpoint Toolbar
        * Viewpoint Experience Technology

        * Open the Security Check folder and double-click Security Check.bat
        * Follow the on-screen instructions inside of the black box.
        * A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt
        * Post the contents of that document in your next reply.

        Note: If a security program requests permission from dig.exe to access the Internet, allow it to do so.

        Please download ComboFix from BleepingComputer.com

        Alternate link: GeeksToGo.com

        Rename ComboFix.exe to commy.exe before you save it to your Desktop
        Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools A guide to do this can be found here
        Click Start>Run then copy paste the following command into the Run box & click OK "%userprofile%\desktop\commy.exe" /stepdel
        As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
        Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console[/list]

        Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

        Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

        Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
        When finished, it shall produce a log for you.  Please include the contents of C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

        If you have problems with ComboFix usage, see How to use ComboFix
