Why dont you just use your DVD drive for your CDroms. DVD drives are compatible with CDroms

To verify the basic function of your DVD-ROM drive, perform the following steps:

      Close all running programs.
Insert a CDrom disk into the DVD-ROM drive.
If the DVD begins to autorun, this is an indication that the drive is able to read the media.
Close the splash screen if it appears.
Double-click the My Computer icon on your Desktop.
Right-click on the drive letter for your DVD-ROM drive.
From the pop-up menu, left-click Explore.
A window should appear displaying the directories on the CDrom media.
Attempt to open (read) the various directories by double-clicking on them.

Also try this with a DVD disk and tell me wich works.

      Hey Frankie,
Sorry. I forgot to say that when I click on explore for a CD it says: Please insert disk into drive N.
When I click on explore for the DVD, it opens and tells me what is on it.

Try to disconnect the CDrom altogether and just leave the DVD drive in. Put the DVD drive on the primary slave make sure the jumpers are set right on the drive and see if it will play CDroms. Or access the disk the same way i mentioned above. if it wont try the DVD drive on the secondary Master set the jumpers and again without the cdrom drive attached and see if it plays CDroms.

If is still doesnt work take out the DVD drive and try the same thing with the CDrom Drive. Let us know how you got on.

Im abit confused about when you said you took the drive out of the faulty computer and tried it in another pc and got same problem. This would obviously mean a problem with the drive. But did you then use that computers Drive the one working PC, to test in your Faulty PC and still got the same problem. and if the answer is yes are you sure your Drive was working in the PC that you said was working. Or did you get this Drive from somwhere else.

Hope this makes sense. anyway try the above.

I'm having the same problem as them. I have a Compaq Presario and I use Windows XP. No cd's will autorun and when I open my computer, the D drive is not the cdrom drive anymore. Sorry if I don't make perfect sense. When I explore my D drive, all I have is something that says recovery with a lock icon but I could have sworn that the D drive is where I use cd's. There was some computer help website that said the cddrive can change or something but I couldn't change it back. Right now the computer is basically telling me I have no cd drive. I tried most things said above but some things I can't do like this:

        Quote
Strange ram setup>another issue>right click on the my computer icon.....click properties.......<device manager> now click the cdrom drive+ sign ..now click properties click settings and if the dma box is not ticked..........then tick it........then do the same for the dvd drive...........or

scanreg/restore..........posted back........before this command is executed.........

I open device manager, I click on the cd rom drive, i open properties but there is no selection for settings, and I don't know if I have a dma box selected.
Is my computer fixable without buying anything? We can't afford it.

Good to see you came back and said what the problem was. It helps everyone else if they have the same problem. It would be nice if more people came back with what the problem was. Even if nobody could fix it here on the forums and they had somone else do it. Instead of posting then never to be seen again.
