I just installed xp and tranferred old word files (windows 95 & 98) but they all come up encoded and I can't read them. what to do? what to do?

Are you using Office to open them or Wordpad?

It won't open with wordpad, and office isn't one of the options it gives me to open it with

If Microsoft Office is installed, use the browse button to find the executable.

If I remember right you need to look around Microsoft's site for a batch document conversion tool.
