Author Topic: Opening/Saving files kicks me off the internet (Read 10445 times)

My problem is that any time I open or save a file onto the computer, I get disconnected from the internet. It doesn't matter if I have a browser window open or not. I still lose my internet connection. Something as minor as opening a notepad document, opening any folder, or saving ANYTHING at all to the desktop or anywhere else on the computer will get me disconnected within about 5 seconds EVERY time. Below are the three logs that I was told to create and include in this post. Btw, I've had this problem for several months now. I'm not sure if it's just a setting that needs to be changed of if something really is messed up.

Hello and welcome to Computer Hope Forum. My name is Dave. I will be helping you out with your particular problem on your computer.

1. I will be working on your Malware issues. This may or may not solve other issues you have with your machine.
2. The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.

6. Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
7. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.

If you can't access the internet with your infected computer you will have to download and transfer any programs to the computer you're using now and transfer them to the infected computer with a CD-RW or a USB storage device. I prefer a CD because a storage device can get infected. If you use a storage device hold the shift key down while inserting the USB storage device for about 10 secs. You will also have to transfer the logs you receive back to the good computer using the same method until we can get the computer back on-line.

This could be your problem. There's a missing mdnsnsp.dll file in your bonjour program. What not uninstall and re-install this program and see if it makes any difference?

Yes, I believe it gets install with QuickTime. BTW, there is a lite alternative to QuickTime. Just google it.

Ok I uninstalled and reinstalled QuickTime. After that was done, I opened a picture on my computer. After I closed that, I tried to open Internet Explorer but it wouldn't load. Instead I lost my internet connection as usual. I clicked on "Diagnose Connection Problems" and it said "default gateway is not available".

I did what you said. As soon as I clicked "save" I was disconnected from the internet. I reconnected and double-clicked the icon on th desktop. At first it was saying "request timed out", then it did pop up. For about a minute after that, Internet Explorer would not load and said that there was no internet connection. When I clicked "diagnose connection problems" It said it could not find and problems with my internet connection. I closed the the troubleshooter and right after that, the page loaded normally. Sorry if this is info you didn't need, I just like to make sure your getting all the information possible as if you were here doing this yourself. Here is the log you requested. Ok. We need to clear your DNS cache.

Please navigate to Start>Run and type cmd

in the window that pops up type ipconfig /flushdns

Ok I tried to view a picture and it kicked me off again. I ran the "diagnose connection problems" again and here is what I got this time:

I downloaded and installed Firefox with no problems. Went to a couple of websites to be sure it was working alright and it was. I clicked Start>Pictures then double-clicked on one of my pictures. It opened fine as usual and then I closed it. Right after that I tried to go to aol.com and it wouldn't load b/c I got disconnected from the internet. I ran the troubleshooter, and it reconnected me. The message I got was:

The default gateway is not available Detected
"Local area connection" doesn't have a valid IP configuration Fixed

I went to aol.com with no problem. Then I opened a picture again and the same thing happened. I reconnected with the troubleshooter again and got same exact message as what I wrote above.

It never has mattered what browser I was using or if I even have a browser window open at all. If I open ANY folder or file on the computer or if I save something to the computer (even saving a NEW notepad document to the desktop) I immediately lose my internet connection. Also it doesn't matter if I'm on my Windows user name or if my husband or daughter is on theirs. On any user name if you open or save a file on the computer you lose the connection to the internet.

Ok. Have you tried resetting your router? Disconnect the power supply for about 30 secs and then re-connect it.

Yes we have done that many times, waiting for several minutes. Also, every time that we get disconnected after opening or saving a file, and use the troubleshooter to get reconnected, it prompts us at the end to unplug the power cord, wait 10 seconds and plug it back in. After that is done, we click "Check to see if the problem is resolved". That's when it checks the connection and gives me that message about the default gateway not being available and the local area connection not having a valid IP address. It always says that the local area connection issue is fixed and that the default gateway issue is still detected. When we unplug that cord, we remove it from the back of the router, but the other end of the cord stays plugged into the power strip under the desk. That's what the technicians from the cable company said to do. Also they have been out several times to check our connection and they say there is no problem. I'm pretty sure they've also tested the router and the modem and said that they were ok too. They've told us that we probably either have a virus or it's a problem in the settings somewhere in the computer. Another thing I forgot to tell you is that we have a laptop that connects through the same router. The only time it gets disconnected is when this computer gets disconnected first. When we first got this computer (last January) I tried to set it up to be able to share files with the laptop and every time I attempted I was disconnected from this one and then the laptop. I eventually gave up on that.

This really sounds like a problem with the router. Think about it. The laptop is running well on the router and then you start up your pc and it gets disconnected and, at the same time, your laptop gets disconnected. The router is dropping out but I'm not sure what's causing it. S suspect it's something that was caused when you attempted to swap files. Please try this.

Just as I thought. The problem appears to be with the router. You can post a thread in the this forum. Someone there could possibly help you with this problem.
