new build win7, sdd 80 gig, use old 1tb hdd winxp
    « on: January 27, 2011, 12:52:08 AM »
I will boot to win7 on ssd. Q1 can i also boot to the old 1tb win xp drive that was in my old computer, and how? Can i just use 1tb hdd as is as a second drive (i want to leave all files on drive and pull them up thru progam in sdd) Q2 can i use 2 old drives 1 1tb and 1 500gb in raid o as storage drives in new build? My old p4 is too slow for new sonar music progam. thank's for any help i can get.

The best way to speed that old computer up would be to add more RAM.

Thank's JJ, Q1answer is very helpful. Q2, raid 0 will give me faster access speed i read some where. I have 16 channel mackie fire wire mixer board for live band and the latency was too high so the need for speed.

Well you can use those two drives in a RAID 0 if you like, but it's always best to use drives of the same type in RAID. Also, with RAID 0 the capacity of your array will be the size of the smallest drive multiplied by the number of drives. So in your case, you will be wasting 500gb. Using them as storage drives will not speed up the computer. The best way to speed up your computer would be to add more RAM.

As I know it, RAID will never give you faster access speeds.  That's not what it was designed for.

RAID 0 is disk striping. It spreads the data between the drives in the arrray. For example if you save a small microsoft word file it will be split into multiple pieces. Half will go on one drive the other half on the other drive. The only advantage of RAID 0 is faster read/write speed.

RAID 0 is also used in some gaming systems where performance is desired and data integrity is not very important. However, real-world tests with games have shown that RAID-0 performance gains are minimal, although some desktop applications will benefit.[1][2] Another article examined these claims and concludes: "Striping does not always increase performance (in certain situations it will actually be slower than a non-RAID setup), but in most situations it will yield a significant improvement in performance." Correct me if I'm wrong, JJ, but isn't any RAID system slower (not than a human could tell the difference) than a non RAID system or single HD?

Thank's rt for the help.I have read that Raid 0 reads both drives at once for faster access,Raid 1 will mirror 2 drives for redundancy  so if one fails the other drive has all information still on it. Raid 10 is a combination of 1and 2.

For Raid 10 you need 3 drives

This is my first build but i think this is the best place for help if I have problems.I went to 2 other sites with these questions and they talked about washing machines and told me i dont need speed, not one answer to my questions.

Thank's Patio,i will take my time and pay attention to win 7 instruction when i install it. When the mobo gets here i will install all parts ,then hopefully it will post ,then win 7,then check for updates on all drivers ,then load programs. i think this is the order.
