    New computer Harddrive wiped clean

If one had a new computer that had the hard drive wiped clean could one sit down using the keyboard to write the operating system to make it work  or would this be something that just could not be done?

Writing an OS may take some time....so i guess in theory the answer would be yes.

Check back in 5 or 6 years when it's close to completion...

No you could not. Since in that condition your keyboard (or any peripheral) means nothing to your cpu. First you must build a boot loader in other machine, in assembly language of your processor. This boot loader is responsible in loading the basic of your operating system. Including keyboard, monitor drivers, and also memory and storage manager. Only after you get these done you can virtually do everything from that said computer.

    Not recommended, though :)

Right. You use another working machine to create tools you need.
Or, you buy some ready made tools from someone.
